The German Shepherd Dog originated in Germany during the late 1800s. At the time, many different regional herding dogs existed, but there was no standardized breed.

In 1899, Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, set out to develop the ideal working dog. After purchasing a remarkable herding dog named Horand von Grafrath, he founded the Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde (SV), establishing the breed standard that still influences German Shepherds today.

Captain von Stephanitz believed that working ability should always come before appearance. His famous philosophy—"Utility is the true criterion of beauty"—continues to shape responsible breeding and training programs around the world.

Because of their intelligence, courage, athleticism, and willingness to work, German Shepherds quickly became one of the most respected working breeds in history.
